These days, while eyeing bigger market share than rivals, many players in the domestic market have come up with a series of discounted offers. They are luring customers in the January-March and July-September quarters – that are traditionally considered as periods of low travel demand. This trend has become very common. The airlines in the Indian market are continuing to announce discounted fares frequently to lure customers. Recently, IndiGo launched a scheme of offering one-way fares starting as low as Rs 1,345 in India. The airline, with its ‘lower than low’ scheme, offered travel from Delhi to destinations like Goa, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata and Jaipur. IndiGo, India’s largest airline in terms of domestic market share, said that all-inclusive one-way fares are “valid for bookings made 90 days before travel date”. It offered a Delhi-Jaipur journey at Rs 1,345 – which was the lowest under this offer. Similarly, Delhi-Mumbai was priced at Rs 2,895; Delhi-Kolkata at Rs 3,861; Delhi-Pune at Rs 3,596; Delhi-Chennai at Rs 4,203, and Delhi-Goa at Rs 4,694. AirAsia too joined the bandwagon to announce all-inclusive domestic fares starting Rs 1,290. The scheme was valid for travel between June 15 and September 30, 2015 while bookings were allowed from March 30 to April 12, 2015. The next player to join the group was GoAir which also announced one-way tickets for as low as Rs 1,299. Looking at the similar trend, Tatas’ Vistara airline too offered discounted air fares for bookings made 90 days in advance.
